Can't get http_redirect() to work

well, as I mentioned earlier, my mac came with PHP environment… I did not have to install a thing… all I know is it’s Apache…

not 100% sure anymore, but I believe this is what I had to do to set it up…

http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/php_leopard.php

or maybe this one…

http://kevchapman.co.uk/development/setting-up-apache-on-snow-leopard/

it was four years ago…

it’s been working flawlessly ever since… I don’t even have to turn the server back on if I reboot the computer (unlike Tomcat…) pretty amazing…:wink:

Does your php.ini file have sections that look similar to these?

; How many GET/POST/COOKIE input variables may be accepted
; max_input_vars = 1000
; This directive determines which super global arrays are registered when PHP
; starts up. G,P,C,E & S are abbreviations for the following respective super
; globals: GET, POST, COOKIE, ENV and SERVER. There is a performance penalty
; paid for the registration of these arrays and because ENV is not as commonly
; used as the others, ENV is not recommended on productions servers. You
; can still get access to the environment variables through getenv() should you
; need to.
; Default Value: "EGPCS"
; Development Value: "GPCS"
; Production Value: "GPCS";
; http://php.net/variables-order
variables_order = "GPCS"

i.e. max is not uncommented and set to 0
G is included in order

hmmmm… it’s so complicated to open it…

http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/php_leopard.php
(hidden files are such a pain…)

lemme see…

trying to figure out how to open it from uinx without messing anything up… (read-only… I know unix, but never open fiiles actually with it…:wink:

ok… here is entire contents of php.ini

; About php.ini   ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; PHP's initialization file, generally called php.ini, is responsible for
; configuring many of the aspects of PHP's behavior.

; PHP attempts to find and load this configuration from a number of locations.
; The following is a summary of its search order:
; 1. SAPI module specific location.
; 2. The PHPRC environment variable. (As of PHP 5.2.0)
; 3. A number of predefined registry keys on Windows (As of PHP 5.2.0)
; 4. Current working directory (except CLI)
; 5. The web server's directory (for SAPI modules), or directory of PHP
; (otherwise in Windows)
; 6. The directory from the --with-config-file-path compile time option, or the
; Windows directory (C:\windows or C:\winnt)
; See the PHP docs for more specific information.
; http://php.net/configuration.file

; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.

oh man… and this is just for my local env., once I get on actual web server at webhosting who knows what awaits me there??? with Tomcat it’s very simple… all config’s that I have on the local work exactly the same on the webhosting… I never have to change anything…:wink:

I doubt you’ll find the answer in the php.ini file. But in general, I think Mittineague is on the right track.

Maya, the fact that when you ran such a simple page, yet the observed redirection behavior was very different than expected, almost certainly means that somewhere your server is configured with additional redirection behavior.

You might have to post your entire server config file for us to inspect. In vanilla Apache, it’s the file httpd.conf, though it might be different for Tomcat.

thank you very much for your help… here is entire contents of httpd.conf, which is here,
HD/private/etc/apache2/

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "/private/var/log/apache2/foo_log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/usr" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/usr//private/var/log/apache2/foo_log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/usr"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

why do some lines appear so big… sorry… don’t know why that is… I didn’t wrap it in code tags…
it should appear as plain text…

Markdown. The # at the beginning of a line has special meaning (it means header)

Just wanted to address the issue of headers already being sent. Someone along the line mentioned that output buffering is sort of hackish but it’s really not. If you enable buffering at the beginning of your script and flush at the end then you can redirect (or set any other headers) anytime you feel like it.

<?php
  // Fire up the output buffering
  ob_start();
?>
<p>cccccc</p>

<?php

    echo 'test<br>';

    // http_redirect('photos.php?tn=pb');

    header('Location: photos.php');

    echo 'test2<br>';

?>
<?php
  // Send the actual content
  ob_end_flush();
?>

This is an extremely common pattern.

oh my gosh – that worked!!! :slight_smile:

thank you so much…

so put this

<?php
  // Fire up the output buffering
  ob_start();
?>

like you suggested, at the very top in common.php, where all my processing is (didn’t even have to put it in photos.php, which calls common.php in an include…)

I have to say, I don’t quite understand this, but well, I guess I have some studying to do…:wink:

(I had finally gotten it to work with <script>… inserts where I wanted to do the redirects… seemed a bit insane to me…:wink: but I had just now finally gotten it work like that…

again, thank you very much…

I know you’ve got around the problem now, but can someone explain please why a redirect is desired in this case? If the user is opening a page with a missing or possibly invalid value for the ‘pn’ parameter, why wouldn’t you choose to simply handle that within the parameter validation code prior to then going on to use the value, rather than redirecting yourself back to the same page with a different parameter value? Or is it just a circumstance of translating existing code?

if (!(isset($_GET['pn']))) {
   $pagenum = 1;
   }
else
   {
   $pagenum = $_GET['pn'];
   }
if (!(is_numeric($pagenum))) $pagenum = 1;
... rest of code to display stuff based on pn parameter

hi droopsnoot,

excellent question… and there is a reason…

if the user messes with my url and types something like

..../photos.php?pn=dflo!sj^sfjow*o

in browser location bar, just saying, ok, photo no. is no. 1, won’t do it for me because then the gibberish will remain in location bar (I actually did try this last night…) I know this is a bit eccentric, but well, that’s what I want… (I guess for case where url ends in just ‘photos.php’ I could handle it without having to redirect…)

thank you very much to all for your help… I really appreciate it…
(in the end the solution was so simple!!! :wink:

OK, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense.

oh brother… now my redirect isn’t working again… this “redirect” thing is not very stable… I eliminated one of the three; of the two remaining only one is working; on the other I get “The page isn’t redirecting properly…”

code:

// check 'tn' param and ph no. in query string
    if ( strpos($URL, 'photos.php') == true) {
        echo 'at photos<br>';
        // if param 'tn' in query string does not check, redirect to url w/correct value for 'tn'
        if (isset($_GET['tn']) && $tn != 'pb') {
            echo 'no -pb- value for $tn<br>';
            header('Location: photos.php?tn=pb');  // WORKS LIKE A CHARM....;-)

oh brother… gotta get to work now… don’t know if will see your response (if any) before I leave… but well, fortunately am not on a deadline here…:wink:

again, thank you for your help…

Hi, headers must be the first thing outputted to a page. Since you echo something out then yes the redirects won’t work. It should actually be throwing an error IIRC.

Make sure headers are the first thing outputted to a page. E.g. remove that echo there…and others.

oh brother… my page is full of “echo”'s…

ok… will try removing them all… later today…

thank you very much for your prompt response…

(how come one of them works and other one doesn’t? gees…:wink:

Not a clue. Get the output removed and then we can go from there. Might want to open a fresh browser and try there to ensure that you’re not seeing anything old. Your header location code is correct so I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get fixed with this…but I am a PHP noob so anythings possible :wink:

you need to use header.

header("Location: http://www.example.com/");
