SitePoint, for example, has nothing about me that is not public record but they still require me to have a password.

Where does SitePoint require you to have a password? Do you mean these forums? They’re Discourse, a separate entity, and they don’t strictly require you to have a password as you can log in via Oauth, too, using Google and other third party accounts.
