Alexa rank is based on traffic. The only way your competitors can affect it is by building a better site than yours and attracting away your potential visitors.

Your Alexa ranking is based on traffic to your site; what would be the point in pretending to have more traffic? Forget about gaming the system, and put your energies into something useful and lasting - like improving your site to attract more real traffic.

It’s the @TechnoBear refrain. Make a better site to get more traffic.

It is indeed.

It beats me why folk are always looking for quick fixes, ways to game the system, ways to recover from penalties for gaming the system - and every time, they want an easy answer. Well - that’s the easy answer. Stop wasting your time on stuff that doesn’t matter or won’t work, and put your energies into improving your site. It’s the one tried-and-tested way to get lasting results. And to my amazement, so very many people don’t seem to want to hear that.

Forget Alexa, Page Rank and all those false web gods. They are a waste of time. Save your money too.

Build your site for your users AND YOU! Enjoy it. The rest will come.

What is the Alexa Rank?

Put simply, the Alexa Rank is a ranking system which bases its ranking schema on the level of traffic each website receives from the number of people who visit a website with the Alexa toolbar installed.

If and only if the Alexa toolbar is installed will Alexa be able to update their statistics otherwise Alexa is oblivious of any traffic to your site.

Hi TechnoBear,

Thank you for your reply. But my problem is, I am regularlely update my site, also doing seo of website. But from past 2 months my alexa is increasing.

It’s hard to understand the reason behind this. Even my site ranking in SERP also incresed but simoultaniously. My site alexa from past month is 6,500 and now its 8,004.

I am updating my content too.

I swear I don’t understand what you mean with this… so you update your site, your Alexa ranking increase… so… what is it now? you’re still updating but no change? or what?

I mean, I would expect that if you update your site (with quality content) you’ll get more traffic from returning visitors and, of couse, your ranking will increase.

Agree with that now PR or Alexa doesn’t matter. Only quality wins the race, Focus on quality which engaged you more users as well as traffic.

Not necessarily. As John has already pointed out:
So Alexa ranking is not a measure of all traffic, but only those visitors who use the Alexa toolbar. I don’t know what percentage of visitors that might be. I don’t have it, and I suspect that’s the case for the majority of visitors (although I could be wrong).

@hemsmail - you didn’t answer my original question. Why are you so anxious to improve your Alexa ranking? Why do you think it matters? You’ve said your site has good content and is improving in the SERPs, so why do you care what rank Alexa gives you?

Actually John I am a buiness man and we have many so many competitors in market. So it’s a advantage for any of website if their alexa ranking is high from other competitors.

Other aspect is, User are more atrract for our website according to website’s Alexa ranking, In perticular Asia specific business.

Hi,

Alexa ranking is based off the users that have the alexa toolbar.

So although your traffic may have increased, the users that are visiting may not have the toolbar installed. This means that you have better stats but a worsening alexa ranking.

The only way to increase your alexa ranking without “gaming the system” would be to give users an incentive to install the alexa toolbar.

This is a hard task, but keep focusing on growth as factors such as page views, visits, duration are all more important than an alexa ranking. Even if you are looking at it for advertising purposes.

So the drop is easy to explain and nothing is out of the ordinary. Alternates are that your competitors or other websites have a higher percentage of their users visiting their sites with the alexa toolbar installed.

Have you thought about verifying your alexa account by paying and adding alexas code to all pages?

People ask: is something important or no? has it influance or no? But google takes many tousands factors and alexa rank as well. Alexa says about how many people is visiting, how popular is website last time. So it’s stupid to not use so helpful information

Do you have a source to back that up? I’d be surprised if Google felt the need to use a third-party metric in its ranking factors - especially one like Alexa, where the results are largely based on a self-selecting section of visitors. (Those with the toolbar installed.)

@hemsmail If your focusing on Local alexa ranking. Then you need to focus on visitor and their country. suppose your website is targeting Australia and most of the visitor are coming from United States, In that case your alexa ranking will also get affect.

Tips To Reduce Alexa Ranking

 1. Focus On Visitor & Targeted Country
 2. Use PPC and Facebook Ads
 3. Write An article about Alexa and Promote your Alexa Page (Not 100% effect but works)
 4. Place Alexa Widget Button In your Website
 5. Promote Your Alexa Page.

You can manipulate alexa ranking by buying clicks. But whats the use of that? Without real traffic alexa will not help you.
If Alexa registers unique users, then you (and any friends you persuade to do this) will register just once. It seems to me a lot of hassle for very little result. And, frankly, I still don’t understand the approach of trying to game the system and fake results, rather than trying to improve results by improving the site.

Alexa manipulation is done posting links to the Alexa page that lists your link. It used to be that this would increase rank. Should still be the same. Is it really manipulation or just a link to promote Alexa and your site?
