Business Details on Google Maps

I recently registered a business with Google Places, which automatically generated a Google + page, too. I’ve done my best to complete all the relevant information in both places, but I have to say I didn’t find the process particularly intuitive. Still, it’s done, and the business does show up on Google Maps. However, there is no description with the entry, although I included one when I set up the Google places listing. There is one other business which appears on the map for the same search terms, and there is a description listed for that.

So, how do I get my business description to show up? Or is it one of those things which depends entirely upon the whims of Google?

I setup a Google place a while ago before Google+ and my description does not show up either.
At one time if you searched for a business and clicked on the marker you had a box come up with all the info but I do not think it is as nice now.

Edit: In fact no other local business descriptions show; I wonder if there is a “trick” to get it to show?

Try a hard refresh just in case you’re looking at a cached version. It’s possible that Google have a fixed schedule, say once a month when any new additions are added to whatever file or database they add them to, for them to show up. Have you tried the business name in Google Earth?

Well at least now I know it’s nothing personal.

No, that’s still the case - only my business just comes up with basic contact details and the other one has both contact details and a description. Same with the text to the side of the map. What’s particularly infuriating is that mine is a specialised business - say, hand painted sheep - and if you search for any of the related terms, the same two businesses appear on the map - mine, which actually does hand painted sheep, but only shows the address, and the other, which is an unrelated business, but it includes in its description “hand painted sheep are available next door”. (Or something along those lines, anyway. ;))

Google support:

If your description isn’t showing up correctly, edit the listing in your Google Places for business account. Verifying your listing allows you to personalize your business’s Place Page with custom fields, photos & videos, posts, and more.

I will give that a go and see what happens.

I had a Google+ page before but it was a default Google page; I now have a Google+ page with the details from the Google places information with the description but still no description on the Google map.

Edit: I have just tried in Firefox and I get more information there - I was using IE before. I still do not get the description but I do get a box with information when clicking on the marker with a “more information” link which takes me to Google+

Not a cached version. Google places says some changes take up to three days to show up (edits to the contact details come into this category) but it’s been longer than three days,

I don’t have Google Earth - but I’m not clear how that would help my issue with Google maps?

In this case, the business has been verified. That’s when the Google + page was generated. I’ve uploaded photos to my Places page and they appear on my Google + page, too. My profile photo appears on my Google + page and on the Google map listing - but the description doesn’t. :frowning: I have added the description to the Google + page, but can’t find any way to get it to show on the map.

Perhaps SpacePhoenix is right and I just need to wait for a Google update.

I have been waiting about 3 years!

Patience is virtue …

If other businesses are getting a description listed, then why not ours? Hopefully somebody knows.

I just found a screenshot of Google Places:

From that it looks like they might send you a pin number through the post, which you’ll have to enter. Does that dashboard screenshot look similar to yours?

That is an old Dashboard but the details are the still the same and yes you do need a PIN number.
The data is also supposed to be checked before it is placed on the map.

Yes - the PIN number is what they use to “verify” the business, and as I said earlier, the business has already been verified.
