Creating a split background CSS and Javascript

Anyone knows how to split the background colour of a header? For example http://www.outlish.com/ As you see the header “This Week’s Issue - Updated Every Monday” this has a different colour from the rest of the header background. I will like to know how to do this. I have the css already to create this however since the title is being pulled from a db i need a script to insert the span tags before and after the first word to achieve this look.

This is not the header am referring to I am speaking about the header for each article. The header that has a word with a brown background and the rest of the sentence in orange.
