Did Rails kill all the Ruby Web Frameworks?

This week’s question is: Did Rails win?

What I mean by that is, where are all the competing Ruby web frameworks? Sinatra doesn’t seem to have done much in a year or so now, and the remaining frameworks don’t make the news much. The only one I hear anything about is Lotus, which has a roadmap and is interesting, for sure.

As web-app-writing Rubyists, is the game over? Rails or nothing? Are you using any non-Rails Ruby web framework in production? Maybe I just need to get out more….

We use a mix of Rails and Sinatra. I’m not too concerned about Sinatra development having slowed. It was designed to be small. Sinatra can be “done” and used without much additional churn. I think most of the energy to do something different from Rails is happening in other languages: lots of JS stuff around Node, Elixir & Phoenix, etc.

Jeremy Evans wrote his Roda framework, which seems on a rise and might replace Sinatra one day.
