DNS: How to point GoDaddy domain at Dedicated Server

Greetings! I’ve had some confusion about this for years but finally need to sort it out. Historically when I’ve bought a domain on GoDaddy and pointed it towards my WHM/CPanel enabled dedicated machine I go into GoDaddy DNS editor and point the “A” record at my static IP address. Works like a charm.

I have a few points of confusion though.

  1. How do I arrange for my email to get passed to the server? Doesn’t the A record point just send http traffic? I want to be able to send/receive emails from my dedicated server.

  2. I’m really confused about NameServers. A lot of services give me ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com. I would like to setup these so I can use them to point to my server but are these 2 records setup on the registrar side? Are they setup on the server after pointing the “A” record?

Any direction would be appreciated.
