If you want to learn about Database Design, you should check out “Database Design for Mere Mortals” by Michael Hernandez.
Rudy’s book that RyanReese mention is also good, but it cover both how to write the SQL queries and model design. While the one I mentioned above, only cover the model design.

as far as joins go, you can read all about them for free here, it’s chapter 3 of the book –
If you want a traditional, yet solid understanding of the inner workings of databases, then I’d look for a used copy of this textbook… (It’s a classic!)
