The main advantage I see with expired domains is that they carry forward the domain age. In long term when the business builds up I believe a better rate / ranking could be achieved based on domain age.
Say a 10 year old domain is available for 20-50$ I believe it would carry a better value as compared to buying a new domain for $10.
Correct me if I am wrong but thats my feeling regarding domain / search ranking and value
