(Go Daddy) Setting up reverse DNS lookup and A Name records for better email delivery

Is anyone able to audit my A Name records and Reverse DNS lookup to see if my records are optimized to have the best email results to clients? I’ve read in a few articles that if you are having problems getting to some peoples inbox, setting up a few things with the domain can help. Is this true?

So you do have your reverse DNS set-up correctly.

There can be many different reasons for mail not performing well. How busy is your overall VPS; can you map the performance on email when database queries are occurring as well as overall site traffic? Is your server fast enough to host and deal with your site traffic plus the email server? How much mail do you send and how frequently? Does your site have significant latency in areas where you send email? Have you checked if the mail you send is rfc compliant; some severs may reject your mail if it does not comply?

We are trying to migrate to a better program to send marketing (using our mailserver), and we have PHPlist (server-side SMTP software) working great, however the identical message/subject/sender is going into the Junk box:

Any idea why the first message sent from Outlook is going into our co-workers inbox but the second message sent from PHPlist with clean html is not (Same sender, same subject, etc)? PS- please dont suggest Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, Vertical Response, etc. It would be really helpful if you had any suggestions on why the near-identical message is not getting through to the Inbox.

It may not have anything to do with your HTML (unless the SPAM filter is catching the   ). It may be that your PHPlist is not contacting the mail server properly. You need to make sure:

  • Must say Helo with the canonical host name that is the same as the host name
  • Your forward and reverse mail pointers need to match
  • Need to ensure it is not an open relay

I would highly recommend looking at swiftmailer.org. I don’t work for them, however I use it and can atest to the fact that it creates RFC compliant email, gives you advanced scheduling features and throttling, and it is regularly updated.
