How far could Swift fly?

This is taken from my latest newsletter, subscribe here.

The Swift is an amazing bird, sometimes flying 200,000 km a year and undertaking most of its life on the wing.

The platform-lock nature of Apple means that no matter what people think about Swift as a language, it's destined for widespread use and reasonable popularity. According to several language charts it's already gaining massive uptake and positive opinions.

After watching a presentation at code.talks and on incorporating C libraries into Swift in the past weeks, what got me thinking most was about its open source future.

Apple have already announced ports for Mac OS X and Linux and depending on future technicalities, who know what other interpreters could be built?

Could a Swift for Android or Windows find Apple making sneaky 'back door' inroads into their competitors markets? Was a seemingly innocent and community-minded announcement really an extremely smart and bold business move?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
