How does gmail have the ability to paste images into the body of email messages? I am assuming it is not a generic texteara , is this a special field or are they using javascript tomfoolery.?

I believe they are using the new Drag and Drop API. Along with HTML5 have come a lot of new browser APIs, which have varying support across browsers at this stage. You need JS to access these browser capabilities.
EDIT: actually, I’m not sure about pasting as such. I was thinking more of the ability to drag an image from your desktop straight into a GMail message, which is pretty cool.
