I have not had a full time job in 5 sad years!

I really would like to. But then everyone would know who Hard Luck Charlie really is. :frowning:

By all means, I am asking it very seriously. About 15 IT years of experience, I have worked with 1 designer who proved to be useless. I do work from HTML/CSS/Javascript, server side programming, and everything in between. Perhaps, I really should say I worked with 0 designers because he was fired very quickly after knowing what he can provide. I am sure there are better designers out there. Anyways, let me get back to my original point. Most application I build are really SPA (Single Page Application) oriented and there are vast array of commercial/open source UI frameworks like Bootstrap. Iā€™ve never really had to create the best looking Grid Table or Tree Menu. In fact, I donā€™t remember creating a custom components for a very long time. When I design an application, this is my process

  • Use Border Layout (North/West/Center/East/South)
  • Put Global Application menu on North
  • Put Context sensitive menu on Left
  • Put Context sensitive content on Center
  • Put footer info on South

Then I use either Bootstrap/ExtJS/etcā€¦ to design it. By all means, Iā€™m not an expert in CSS to create the most jazzy looking UI but my customers were always 100% satisfied with opensource/commercial UI that Iā€™ve used. With this said, what is the value of hiring a designer? Iā€™m pretty sure a single designer can not out do whatā€™s provided by commercial UI like ExtJS/KendoUI/Wijmo. It could be my ignorance that I do not know the value of designer but as of now, I can not recommend hiring a full time designer to my customers.

me too, my work is only mmo but it not enough for life , sad

@sg707; youā€™re right up to a point. You can base your application on a theme or a generic design done by someone else and be happy about it, forgetting to contract someone specifically to design for you because it will only need ā€œsmallā€ changes here and there.

But those were designed by someone, and themes (it doesnā€™t matter if it is for Bootstrap, Joomla or Wordpress, etc) are also designed by someone.

Good designers are still needed, and a good designer still worths its weight in gold (like any truly good and outstanding specialist in its field). But a good design will not only create something catching and beautiful to see for the eye. He will understand the public it is directed to, and how to attract that publicā€¦ and in the world of Web Design, that also means how to enhance themes and layouts to make them not only beautiful but practical and easy to use. A lot of UX right there.

Of course, he may suggest the best behaviour for a button or a select field but he will need a programmer or coder to make it work as expected and desired. But heā€™s the one that says ā€œthis should do this and that, and work with this animation or, when JS is disabled, should do thisā€

Maybe if you take some screenshots, blacken out any personal details such as url, etc, and put the images up on a photo sharing website like photobucket or flickr?

It is so sad. In which profile are you looking for a job?

I will be 52 years old this year and was laid off last year. It has been 9 months for me. I was the jack of all web in my previous job (over 10 years) and was laid off due to an acquisition by a large company. Iā€™ve had a couple of interviews bu nothing has worked out for me either. And YES, both companies have a young team, Iā€™m guessing no oneā€™s older than 30 years! I am getting a bit hesitant to send my CV lately due to this experience. I have profiles in multiple job boards. I share your sentiments.

Guess again

Okayā€¦ Iā€™m not guessing, I am 98% sure they were all 30 years old and below

Oh right, sorry, I though you meant the people hanging round here.

I can only go by what youā€™ve posted in this thread, but your resume sounds outdated by about 10yrs or more. You should be up to speed on new technologies and after 5yrs of unemployment you should even have a nice portfolio to present that showcases awesome new things like Angular.js and heavy Bootstrap customization, something to show you havenā€™t just completely stagnated. The most recent sounding thing you have is flash and itā€™s a fairly recent casualty in WebDev, but itā€™s still officially a causality. The only real current legitimate use it has is in live streaming video, but as soon as good tech comes out to replace it, that too will be gone.

People arenā€™t going to hand you a job. Forget about age discrimination, your skills are outdated. Age has really nothing to do with it. The reality of it is, nobody wants a new-hire with an outdated skillset. Knowing these things and being able to work with legacy applications is a big plus, but not if thatā€™s all you know.
