I’m not sure why we shouldn’t create menus on the left-side. Most people (who read from left to right) notice first the things presented on top and left. It’s an advantage to put the important stuff there.
I agree with you. Website should serve main content first to user and search engine. Search engine spider goes from top, left, body, right, and bottom. If you avoid left side navigation, then crawler find main content just after header and user find main content first. Headline, page title and meta description are very important for user and search engine. Creatively crafted title and description increase page CTR in SERP (search engine result page)

Nothing is wrong with having the menu on the left side but following good practices is an another thing.
Equally, following standard conventions is a good thing. Most websites have navigation either along the top or down the left. That means that that is where people will look for it and expect to find it. If you’ve got it anywhere else, this may confuse them and make it harder for them to navigate your site and find the information they want.

Keep in mind that you need to create website for humans … not for search-engines.
Most of the people (in Belgium) expect a menu on the leftside or a topmenu.
If you only look for the best SEO-option, then you shoukd use a menu on the bottom of your website.
You can still use a left-menu, and put the code for that left-menu at the bottom of your source-code with a css-file that describes that the leftmenu should be on the leftside (float: left)

- Do not use FRAMES in web page.
- Keep text minimal and to the point. Your primary message should be made on the first screen without scrolling*down the page .
- Use attractive headlines.
- Offer something of value on the web site. Ex. FAQ, technical support, newsletter etc.
- Use a good font style on all the webpages.
- Use different colors on headline
- Use indented lists where appropriate for easy reading.
- Place navigational buttons or links at the top and bottom of page for easy navigation.
- Place your name, address, phone number, and e-mail link on every page.
- Make it easy to request additional company/product information.
- Don’t include your own picture regardless how pretty you feel you are.
- Minimize use of graphic files. Colored tables are an excellent way to add color without graphic file overhead.
- If it’s not important, don’t put it on your web page.
also keep in mind the size of web page. People do not like to visit websites that take too much time to load.
If you use your content on the left side they crawlers read your content first instead of your menu. Content is the most important part of a website so it will be crawled first by the Google bots. Therefore menu on right side a better according to search engine optimization.

I think mostly menus are on left-hand side. I don’t understand why you suggest not to do this. If you are saying that you, one should be different from others, then there will be some logic of your suggestion.
