Ive just installed mybb on my local host and looked at the coding and there seems to be a hell of a lot of tables used..is this the same with vbulletin....?
I remember someone telling me that tables were very bad for all sorts of reasons.
Is it just the coding in mybb is not great or is this quite common....?

Well a forum by its nature has a large number of pages that display tabular data so you'd expect to see a fair few tables for correctly defining that part of the page content. Not using tables for tabular data is just as wrong as using tables when it isn't tabular data.
The simplest way to find out what HTML vBulletin uses is to view the source of the SitePoint forum pages.
