Come up with standards for descriptions for specific categories. Then its is easier to manage. I think you will have to clean it and name all the data. This will be time consuming, but once you’ve cleaned it and established the standards, then from there onward you can mange it with ease.

And why don’t you just let people choose their own terms? Now, that’ll be easier!

My dear friend your description should match the content of your site, articles for articles and directory for directories. Be specific and don’t use any misguiding words which does not a part of your directory

@oppedal ;

Seems pretty straight forward.

Under category: Choose your topic.
Under sub category: refine your search.
Under Search engine: find it on your favorite search engine.

Nice idea. I hope it works out for you. However, you might want to get some design tips in the Review My Site Forum. Take a look at the forum guidelines there ([URL=“http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?871218-Need-a-Web-Content-Review”]they are also stickied in this forum), follow the directions and see what the community thinks.
