I am a Political Teenager, are you? If so you are special, unique, and most likely informed. Wouldn't you like a place where your voice can be heard? Politicians do not listen to us since we can't vote. Who will listen to us? Of course! Other Teenagers! At www.politicalteenager.com we provide a safe environment for teens to express their political selves and mature before they reach the voting booth. What is a opinion if it cannot be heard?
Lucky you! You get to have a first look at what The Political Teenager is all about. Please tell us what you think, all criticism is good criticism so do not worry our feelings are not hurt easily.
NOTE: Please do not grade us on content quality (articles) the articles are just examples, we know they are poorly written and have grammatical and spelling errors.
We thank you for your time.
It's great that you are taking an interest in politics and i can see what you are trying to do with your site but a few changes i would make are -
Make it a little more exciting, if your aim is to get teenagers interested in politics then it should be more based on how a teenager see the world. It looks a bit too much like a broadsheet newspaper, which isn't exactly aimed at teenagers. Don't get me wrong i don't think you should dumb it down and have Jay-Z as a background or anything.
Is the flag purposely like that? are the stars missing a political thing?
An idea perhaps could be to replace the font heading you have with letters ripped out of newspapers to spell the site name. I would guess you could also find an american flag in a magazine or photoshop it so it is all tied together. I'm thinking of stuff like this for inspiration http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/682771/682771,1299620000,1/stock-photo-letters-cut-from-newspaper-background-72760891.jpg (not my image).
Might be too busy but you could have really faint newsprint background instead of the checkers.
I'm in the UK so perhaps that explains the slow loading. tools.pingdom.com is really useful for page speed checking.
I am a bit confused why you have the weather widget as the main part of the page? Surely this should be 'todays hot topic' or 'In the news right now'. (the widgets also took ages to load for me)
I'd revise the lower section with the boxes. It is really confusing with the boxes all changing and is causing issues with viewability. When they all change at the same time they judder as the page is trying to load 8 new images and text so the transition effect doesn't work properly and i get a bit lost as to which i have seen and which i haven't
Sorry if that comes across as a bit negative
hope it helps though.
The site loaded slow for me (using a laptop Google Chrome) and the sliding effects when I'm going through different pages are a bit slow as well.
For the front page, the white text “Politics from a teenage perspective” can be a bit difficult to read against some of the images. I'd change the colour and/or put that at the top of the page near your logo.
On some pages, the borders on either side stretch well past where I think they should stop. On the opinion page, the borders don't go down all the way.
One last thing about the borders, I'd put them behind the main page image as well or resize the image so that it fits between them.
Hope it helps.
70 scripts and 27 style sheets for one page? Almost 3MB, even after compression? That's way too big, and far too many requests. I have a decent broadband connection, but for anybody on dial-up, or on many mobile networks, this site would be impossible to use.
I thank you for your constructive criticism. I have made some changes that you suggested and I like the results. If you could take the time to look over my site again I would greatly appreciate it.
I have gained a lot of users recently but I notice a very large amount of them stop at the Homepage and do not continue to the pages that contain content. What do you think causes this? Are they not interested? Is my site confusing? Maybe someone can share some insight.
Dear Political Teen!
This is a new website and it is obvious that you get some bad reviews here but keep this thing in mind that it is all for your improvement. By following the guidelines given here by the members will help you to make your site users friendly.
My reviews about the site are also not so good because you have inserted high graphics on your website which are slowing the site and overall efficiency of the site. I first checked the speed in Google Chrome and then thinking that may be it is a browser problem, i tested it in Firefox, but I am sorry to say that performance of the site was poor. So it needs more improvement.
Those big background images are killing your page speed (N.B. Google takes page speed into account for rankings) some of them are 5mb! this is far too big.
Do you have photoshop?
you need to save them much smaller file size. Obviously balance that with quality.
there is probably a free site to reduce your image size if you don't have photoshop.
also i'd lose the hit counter personally, they were good in the 90's and just add to your page file size.
Hi Political Teen,
Let's start with the speed of loading.
Your website is taking to load about ~20 sec. In total it's 387 requests and about 7.2mb loaded.
Usually users would leave the website that would load more than 3-5 seconds. There's something that you could work on
Hint: try reducing image size and quality to about 75% (JPEG), you can do it via PhotoShop, GIMP or command line tools like ImageMagick's 'convert' command, example:
convert yourimage.png -quality 75 yourimage.jpg
There's one phenomena that I noticed is the blank space on the pages About, Community and Support.
That's may be Wix's bug.
Another "amazing" feature that I found on the website is the "debating club".
Debating club is just a forum inside of iframe on the website... I was amazed, it's really original!
However, it creates more load on your the website. Basically leave the link to the forum instead of putting it inside of iframe.
And finally picture which waited for:
Design is pretty good, however some elements can be improved.
Work on loading speed by:
- Reducing images quality and size,
- Switching to another platform (may be), because I see too many bugs and stuff related to Wix platform (lots of scripts, empty space, etc.)
- Sending user to the 'debating club' forum instead of showing it in iframe.
You can try WordPress or Joomla for your website, however, I don't sure if you can transfer the theme from Wix to WordPress or Joomla.
Good luck with your project, Political Teen!
Thank you volter for your comprehensive review, it is a real eye opener. Unfortunately I am stuck with wix but I can make it work. I would much rather use Squarespace or wordpress. Again thank you.
Volter I have one question for you. When you said "these blocks are off of style" did you mean to write " these blocks are out of style"?
Yeah, sorry for my English. I meant 'these blocks are out of style', thanks for correcting!
I appreciate the idea behind the website, but I feel like the design part could be executed better. Overall it feels like there’s too much going on and all the important information is hidden in the bottom part of the page. The scrolling images don’t seem to provide any value to the user and instead are very distracting, I would remove them and use more space in the top section for the news. Also consider structuring the information in a way that doesn’t require too much scrolling.
I love the design of the top half of the page- it really stands out! However, you have a scrolling image on top of another scrolling image which really feels too much and is distracting. Focus on the content that's important, so the scrolling feed of latest posts is probably the only thing that should be moving.
This looks like a spammy old fashioned ad and doesn't fit in with the rest of the site. Why is it there twice? Put it into a simpler, more modern design. Maybe just running text with a line either side in a black or grey font (the red adds to the spamminess)?
The blog previews also look out of date. Try losing the colour blocks and using subtler colour accents, like a heading or a simple colour line to break up the posts.
You also have slightly too many fonts. I can see about 4 or 5. Try sticking to 3 max. One for general text, one for subheadings and one for headings. It will look a lot neater and more cohesive.
Hope this helps!
First off, I like the overall design of your site, pretty cool!
One thing I noticed right off the bat was that your home page took a quite some time to load. You may be able to fix this by taking some extra animations (like the logo floating in) off of the front page. I do like the scrolling images and I think that you should keep that. However, the overlying text over the images should definitely be a different color other than plain red (too much pop). I'm thinking a semi-transparent background to that text might help too.
Another thing would be to reconsider the font. The typewriter font doesn't come off as professional or eye-catching to me. Most sites should stick to a sans-serif thats easy to read and somewhat interesting. Other than that clean up some of your color choices for other fonts such as the word "Legal" in the footer, and I think you have a very feasible website design as the topic of what you're doing is very cool.
I've just had a chance to view your site. It's great that you are interested in politics and would like to attract teens to your site. But where are the relevant news articles? It seems you have news fro all over. I think that you should really focus and concentrate on political news as it affects teenagers. The overall design of the website could do with more simplicity..once again...focus. Best of luck!
Hello dear , This is great that ou are interested in politics and hope you will be a great politician , The site was really good and you have added there very useful information, I dont know you have created by yourself the site so you are also a web designer and web developer right. If that is true will be great because we will have a developer politician. Hope you will continue with your career , best wishes
You can really faint newsprint background instead of the checkers. It is good.
all comments here are realy descriptive.
in short - its a mess.
Weird spaces, bad alignment and such issuses are all across the site.
Try to use the bootstrap CDN which will bundle all the buttons, menu, grid you need to aligh stuff.
