Go to phpclasses.org then search for their PHP class which will do exactly that for you. Great site with PHP classes for just about anything.

Use passwordmeter for checking password strength. It is very helpful and suggest you how to make your password strong. I also suggest you to make a password with the combination of capital, small letters and symbols.
