I’ve known about it for years but never seen it documented anywhere.
There’s a lot of that – and it’s why it’s good to know all the different ways of doing it – from double wrapper with a negative margin float, to fixed stacked floats, to fixed opposite floats, to the float and overflow I mentioned here.
No one of them is the perfect answer for every situation.
