Publishing MySQL Data on the Web

<?php

if (!$link)
{
    $output = 'Unable to connect to the database server.';
    include 'output.html.php';
    exit();
}

if (!mysqli_set_charset($link, 'utf8'))
{
    $output = 'Unable to set database connection encoding.';
    include 'output.html.php';
    exit();
}

if (!mysqli_select_db($link, 'ijdb'))

i have Kevin Yank Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP and MySQL and the above script looks exactly like the book but i keep getting this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect() in C:\Program Files (x86)\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\connect\index.php on line 2

I dont Know what to do

Make sure PHP is version 5 and MySQL is enabled.

http://www.php.net/manual/en/faq.migration5.php#faq.migration5.mysql

Yup, it is

Hmmm, I’m not sure what else it could be. Perhaps other members here know. If I got more info, I will post them.

There is a database (sqlite) built into PHP 5. Perhaps you could use that instead.

Change mysqli to mysql and try, if not

do a phpinfo(); and post the results

AND

no need to multiple post the same questions in the forum, Ive already answered this one this morning under a different heading

If you are going to try what Mandes has suggested and still getting the error, this article may explain why:

What you will most likely find (and Mandes is leading you towards), is that the mysqli library is not enabled. mysql and mysqli are seperate libraries in the config file.

Where would I put the phpinfo(); I’m a noob at this lol

make a file called info.php and put in it these 3 lines

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

save to your server, then run from a browser, you should get a long page of settings, if you post that we may get some idea as to whats going on.

Have you tried what was suggested by Tom’s link in post6 ?

No not yet I’m at school I have to wait till I get home I’m on this website on my phone

That clears that up then. You don’t have the MySQLi extension enabled.

If you’re new to all this, you might want to consider downloading WAMP Server instead. It allows you to get ahead with the actual PHP part of learning PHP.

Once you’re comfortable with PHP, then’s the time that you should start worrying about the server configuration.

well i could do that but i want to know how each part works?

```php
;;;;;;;;;;;
; WARNING ;
;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About php.ini   ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior.  In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'.  PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory.  The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple.  Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
; |        bitwise OR
; &        bitwise AND
; ~        bitwise NOT
; !        boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
;  foo =         ; sets foo to an empty string
;  foo = none    ; sets foo to an empty string
;  foo = "none"  ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
;
; Handler used to store/retrieve data.
session.save_handler = files
; Argument passed to save_handler.  In the case of files, this is the path
; where data files are stored. Note: Windows users have to change this
; variable in order to use PHP's session functions.
;
; As of PHP 4.0.1, you can define the path as:
;
;     session.save_path = "N;/path"
;
; where N is an integer.  Instead of storing all the session files in
; /path, what this will do is use subdirectories N-levels deep, and
; store the session data in those directories.  This is useful if you
; or your OS have problems with lots of files in one directory, and is
; a more efficient layout for servers that handle lots of sessions.
;
; NOTE 1: PHP will not create this directory structure automatically.
;         You can use the script in the ext/session dir for that purpose.
; NOTE 2: See the section on garbage collection below if you choose to
;         use subdirectories for session storage
;
; The file storage module creates files using mode 600 by default.
; You can change that by using
;
;     session.save_path = "N;MODE;/path"
;
; where MODE is the octal representation of the mode. Note that this
; does not overwrite the process's umask.
i removed the ; when i followed the directions in the book the day i configured everything
have you restarted the apache server since you did it, though?
yes how about you all remote control my computer
Even though it is good to learn how things work but sometimes it is better to start with things that are already working. I used to configure my PC manually with Apache, PHP, and MySQL separately till I found WAMP Server and now I don’t think I will ever do what you are doing now. Unless you are thinking about starting up a web hosting services, things like this will certainly good to know. But if you just want to play with programming using PHP and MySQL then just install WAMP, it’s only take a couple of minutes.
well i installed Wamp Server after i uninstalled apache and mysql from my computer and deleted the PHP file. i was amazed that my databases wasn’t deleted
but i got this error now FML
I figured it out well thank you all for your help couldnt have done it without you all ive been trying to figure out this page for weeks but using wamp server it took only a few minutes.
