Rel=canonical in SEO need brief example?

what is rel=canonical in SEO please give answer in simple words with brief explanation i read it on internet but can’t understand so please give the real answer means don’t give from internet or other resources, your own practical example will be appreciated

Hi there. It would be helpful to know what you didn’t understand from sources like this:

The first one gives a pretty clear demonstration.

Essentially, if you have more than 1 URL pointing to the same content on your site, you can tell Google which one to index and which to ignore (as it’s better for SEO reasons to have just one of them indexed). The canonical link in the head of your pages tells Google which one to index.

Baasically look at my website.
http://www.codefundamentals.com

I put the first page of my blog post on the homepage.

I use that as a canonical for http://www.codefundamentals.com/index/1/  . That’s a great example.

@RyanReese thanks for informative answer please let’s clear that what are the benefits of canonical and why you don’t put another keyword instead of index

because it is a filename not a keyword and the filename of the home page of almost all sites is index
