Since this seems to be an extremely common question amongst SitePoint members I’ve decided to make a sticky that just lists what is available. Please help make me a list of available software. I guess what we would need to know for each piece of software is:
Name
Cost/Free
Platforms it runs on
Programming languages it supports
URL
I’ll periodically update this list so we can have a one-stop thread for text editors.
I’ll start:
UltraEdit Cost: $ 39.95 (€ 34.76) Platform: Windows Languages Supported: All
Name - Crimson Editor Cost/Free - Free Platforms it runs on - Windows Programming languages it supports - Alot - See Site URL - http://www.crimsoneditor.com/
Name - gPHPEdit Cost/Free - Free Platforms it runs on - Linux (also native AMD64) Programming languages it supports - PHP, HTML, CSS, SQL URL - http://www.gphpedit.org/
jEdit Cost: $0 Platforms: anything with a Java runtime Programming languages: anything I’ve thrown at it! I mostly use it for JSP, XSLT, and Ruby, though PHP, ASP, CF, SQL, HTML, CSS, etc. all work too.
TextPad Cost: $ 28.80 (€ 24.30)/Try before you buy Platform: Windows Languages Supported: All Description: Whether you simply need a powerful replacement for Notepad, a tool for editing your web pages, or a programming IDE, TextPad does what you want, the way you would expect.
Nvu Cost: Free Platform: Win, OS X, Linux Languages: XHTML, CSS, Javascript, and I think PHP/ASP Description: Generates clean code. Features file management and uploading. WYSIWYG editor.
SubEthaEdit Cost: $35 (v. 2.3), Free (v. 2.2) Platform: OS X Languages: XHTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP/ASP, … Description: Collaborative editing using Bonjour network. Multiple people can edit the same file at the same time and see each other make edits as they type.
Not sure how to enter this, so I’ll just say it. You can get BBEdit for $99. If you register TextWrangler (which is free), then you can “crossgrade” to BBEdit for $99. Your get the coupon in your TextWrangler registration email. Not sure why BareBones doesn’t just charge $99 in the first place, but anyways just wanted to point out that you don’t have to pay $199 for BBEdit anymore.
You can also get the $99 crossgrade price if you have Dreamweaver or GoLive.
