Trying To Add A Class To A Span But I Must Have The Wrong Selector

I am trying to style the text “The New Supply Chain Agenda” that is in the first paragraph in the center column (#column2_alt). I wrapped the phrase in a span and I thought I had styled it properly, but I cannot get it to turn blue, bold and switch the font to Arial. Can someone take a look and tell me what I am doing wrong?

Add the font-size to the shorthand. This should do it. The font shorthand will be ignored if you omit the font size and the font family.

That did the trick. Is that a hack? How can I find out more about this? Is it somewhere in the SitePoint CSS Reference?
