I have a few sites hosted on several servers and I'd like to monitor the uptime of those sites.
I'm wondering what is the technology involved in building a website to monitor the uptime and downtime of websites, anyone knows? If you have some PHP software to install for that it would be great...
Basically I'm looking to build something similar to this website: http://aremysitesup.com/, I'd also use it to monitor my clients websites.

We have a system like that in place, it was implemented by one of our interns. I'm not a technical person so can't really help.

I've just founded a company that provides exactly the service you mentioned:
You could also go the self-hosted route by using PHP / Perl scripts and frequent cron jobs - but you really need to know what you're doing to provide a reliable service that doesn't generate false alarms. Clients don't like being awoken in the middle of the night to find there's nothing wrong with their server

Not sure about a program but there are plenty of services that do this as cheap prices.
