Well I'm stumped, can't get to the internet after virus attack

I haven’t been, and really don’t like working on other people’s computers any more but a friend called and said her machine was loaded with viruses and she was desperate (desperate enough to call me :wink: ) SO I took a look and sure enough it was loaded. Did the normal cleaning in safe mode, tracked down all the gremlins and thought it was good to go but NOOOOO … still can’t get to the internet via a browser (IE or FF). Can ping and do tracert all day long but nada via a browser.

Firewall is off, checked everything else I could think of and I’m not seeing it. Here’s a hijack this log:

Well I finally got it cleaned up, ran 4 different spyware / malware programs to finally get it all cleaned out.

Looks like she downloaded a trojan that locked her access down but download a couple of hundred viruses and malware apps at the same time … funny thing too, AVG couldn’t see it.

AVG is crap. When I have some potential malware in my PC I usually try with 3-4 antivirus software to get rid of the viruses. You can never be too sure you are clean…

your friend has a lot of crap loaded in her browsers.

try download Malwarebytes Antimalware ->install it -> update it -> run it -> run it from safe mode too.

download cwshredder and run it.

clear all temp files and empty trash -> reboot.

if this doesnt solve the problem, try uninstall AVG ->reboot ->scan with malwarebytes antimalware from both normal and safe mode and reboot and install AVG again.

you may also try to repair the network connections on her XP box from the network dialog and you may also use ipconfig from cmd prompt with the parameters “ipconfig /release” and “ipconfig /renew”

do you know what viruses she had?

My advice: If your friends machines been infected, the best thing you can do (if the antivirus can’t repair it) is to format and reinstall from scratch. You don’t want to run the chance that the malware may come back and once a machines been compromised, it’s untrustworthy (on all accounts) in the future. :slight_smile:

Have you tried the ‘winsock’ fix? I once had this problem on an XP machine. Try a Google search - I can’t offer more details as it was years ago.
