i understand the homepage script is obsolete or whatever, so does anyone know if there is a script to check if the site the user is visiting is already their start page?

No, that sort of information is not provided by the web browser to JavaScript.
Sometimes you can get specifics, such as the isHomePage method on Internet Explorer, but you’ll find that it’s very different if not non-existant across different web browsers.
