What core/well-known features/gems get taken for granted?

I wrote an article last week on Rails Application Templates, a feature I knew was out there but never really studied. I was floored at how robust and feature-rich RATs (heh) are. And it’s a core feature.

It made me wonder what other “core” features of Ruby or Rails or Sinatra or have been largely taken for granted or pushed to the background by community gems.

Do you know of any?

I use Ramaze framework. I don’t really see any major differences between ruby, php and c++.
