What is the Wordpress Update Script called?

If anyone here has run wordpress they have a nice little update feature built in, I am wondering what this is called.

Its not a shell script (i don’t think).

Im trying to figure out going about settings something like that up and needed to know if there is a name for it.

Before it was built into WordPress it was known as the WprdPress Automatic Upgrade plugin (or WPAU).
