Hi I am making update on a DOM using AJAX

requirement is very simple a User is registerd for some notifications and messages.

I have placed to Icons one for messages and other for notifications in my DOM page I want to know two things

1)How to updates these two fields(When a New Message is incoming or any new notification is posted)

2)I also want to show a Drop down like sitepoint.com and facebook.com when user clicks on any Messages or Notifications items?

How can I do this?
