You can try magento but WordPress is the best platform for making any site, you add spotlight plugin for ecommerce business.

The platform you want to choose depends on the money you are going to invest in making your online shopping site/ E-commerce site. If you have good knowledge of php,mysql, ajax and jquery you go for Magento, because magento is an open source platform only developed for e-commerce websites. Its free of cost and you can get a lot of tutorials and guidance if you get stuck or face some issues with the platform.
They are many other open source platform like Shopify, Big Commerce,izzonet and volusion are also good. Depends on the knowledge you have in developing and which language you are comfortable with. If you are going to give it to some agency for development they will charge you more.
