Why validate XML?

I have been experimenting with DTD’s and Schema’s in order to learn how to created well formed and valid XML documents. I know XML is better when its valid, but I cannot actually see why it is better? I have researched and somehow cannot find a clear answer to why it should be valid. Can anyone enlighten me as to the benefits of a valid XML document?

If it isn’t valid then the markup is meaningless and could be interpreted in many different ways most of which will not be what you intended.
