Windows defender is not updating in windows 8.1

I have updated to windows 8.1 there are virus and spyware protection updates available in notification area but every time during the update it stops and popup appears with the message. I have tried again and again but I am getting the same error. Do I need to install other antivirus program such as avast, but I want to stick with the same windows defender as it is a built-in product.

Have you tried rebooting?

Under help > about, what are the version numbers for the “client version” and the “antivirus definition”?

When you face such type of problem then simply restart your system and again update the Widows Defender.
