I am interested in learning how to customize wordpress. I am proficient in HTML,CSS, and PHP. I am looking for some info that might steer me in right direction.Like websites or articles.

The themeshaper article listed above is one of the best out there and probably the one that has benefited me the most.
I recommend the book Profession Wordpress design and Development by Brad Williams. Got me into making plugins, themes and learning all about the WordPress Core
