Best place to start is the sticky threads at the top of this forum, especially the “HTML vs XHTML” one.

Other than that, the first few links of a web search should do the trick.

Sitepoint have a number of good quality books if you want to learn HTML

If you want to learn about the standards, check out W3C (not W3C schools)
