XAMPP installation error

Hi all,

Im new to PHP and i wanted to set up a localserver. I tried installing it manually and had issues with Apache 2.2. Now i tried XAMPP and i get the same problem that port 80 or 443 are already in use…
I have turned off the port on skype, so , its not skype thats interfering.
Im running windows 7 and I dont know how to see what ports are being used because the netstat command doesnt seem to work on windows 7.

Anyone have any advice, i’m a beginner so it would be nice if it would be possible to keep it simple :stuck_out_tongue: ?

cheers

Port 80 and 443 shouldn’t be in use without you knowing about it. It’s virus check time I fear.

The most frequent problem with xampp on Vista and 7 is it doesn’t like the permissions system of Windows. This can be averted by installing it outside the Program Files directory - I personally have it on C:\xampp.

But if something has glommed onto those ports and you don’t know about it, then chances are it is NOT good. I’d advise running HiJack This and looking over the process list, or posting it here where other techies can take a look at it and perhaps see what looks fishy.

Well, i had considered a virus and i scanned my whole system with both AVG and BitDefender and they both found no viruses.

I tried installing xampp on c:\xampp and the problem persists. I also tried running Hijack this but the log file really doesnt tell me anything :stuck_out_tongue: but i copy/pasted it below.

Also, this might be a dumb question, but i’m using the universities internet access and might that have anything to do with my port problems?
and since we’re already at the dumb questions, what is this SSL? and could it have anything to do with it?

cheers and thanks in advance

go to iss server and click stop then again try to start your apache server. now your xampp will work.

I really doubt that’s the problem. For one, IIS would have shown up in the HiJackThis service list. Second, it doesn’t come on unless you turn it on explicitly, and I’m pretty sure Pacalolo would remember doing that. Third, if he isn’t running Win 7 Pro or Ultimate he doesn’t have IIS.

The log file reveals you have Apache already installed and running as a service. Looking at it I see this line…

O23 - Service: Apache2.2 - Unknown owner - C:\\Apache2.2\\bin\\httpd.exe (file missing)

That’s not your xampp’s apache (That should be at C:\xampp\apache\bin\httpd.exe - and I know this since I spotted that your xampp mysql is up and running in the process list). And it is responsible for locking ports 80 and 443 most likely.

Since it is running as a service you can stop it for long enough to determine that your xampp installation is working. To do so click start and in the search bar type “services” and hit enter. You should get a windows auth dialog. The services are listed in alphabetical order so Apache should be near the top. Click it, then click stop the service. Then try to run the apache instance tied to xampp.

If you install xampp’s apache as a service it will uninstall this other apache instance as a service - but before doing that I’d advise finding out how and why that apache service got in there.

Some particularly sloppy viruses and bugs have been known to install apache into the system since it is open source software after all. More likely it was installed when you installed something else - again laziness on the part of the developers (IMO) to put a full bore webserver on a system, especially when it probably doesn’t need it.

So you aren’t out of the woods yet, but this should at least get your xampp install up and going.

No. Although the university would probably block outsiders from reaching your apache, the machine should be able to reach itself via localhost or 127.0.0.1 just fine. The ports are bound locally by another apache instance, which is why xampp’s apache won’t start.

SSL is “Secure Socket Layer” - a type of encryption and the one used for https, SFTP, SCP and SSH operations.

From a command prompt you can use netstat -ano to see what process is using what ports on your computer.

I did everything as you said, michael and it worked
I just recently started using the forum, and people like you make it a real pleasure to interact with this forum.
Seriously , thanks for all the time you took to help me out
