Look into each of our haikus and you will notice each line has 5-7-5 format.

The way I remember it is it is the number of times your chin drops when you say a word.
Example:
c-p-ra-di-o
If you place your hand under your chin, as you say, ‘c’, ‘p’, ‘ra’, ‘di’, ‘o’ you will feel that your hand moves because your chin drops to say the next part of the word.
muscle all tense,
eyes blink and roll, hand is raised -
one single keypress

I have students that don’t know what syllables are.
That is a great way to explain it!
I don’t like Haiku;
Poems that rhyme, I do.
Haiku is boo hoo.
something is smelly near me
what could it be? fish?
nevermind, it’s jill
