Web development for profit: the adult industry?

Hi,

I am pretty proficient in html, css, jquery and php/mysql will be next on my list of things to learn. I was doing some reading on affiliate marketing and google adsense which gave me a new insight into ways to make money online outside of being a freelance web developer or selling a product/having a members subscription area, although to be making any kind of real money would need a good site with alot of traffic. Then i got to thinking, probably one of the biggest industries online is the adult industry. Although i have absolutely no idea how money making in this field works. Does anyone know of any resources where i could read about how to make money in this field? Sure i could set up a website with a monthly subscription but where does the content come from? Is this really the best method? Adult websites would get alot more trafic than most, so are there affiliate programs for this content where more people are likely to visit links/purchase products ie sending a skim to me if they were referred from my site? Or even a google adsense type of setup for this industry? I have no idea how these sites operate for money making purposes especially with there being so much free content on tubes etc. this isnt some kind of career option or anything but basically wanting to get something online and start making some cash alongside my regular job

business plan: porno site,lol

I think your a victim of the misconception that many people have. That is creating ANY website results in dollars rolling in the door. That simply isn’t true. If it were that easy I wouldn’t have a 9 – 5. As for content one would think you create it yourself?, lol

Adult is the oldest and most saturated business on the internet. Adult content is pretty much worthless these days. Take a look at all the tube sites with streaming porn. Who pays for it any more when it is all available for free?

There are a few websites like Gof*ckyourself.com (replace the * with the appropriate letter) and netpond.com where adult webmasters congregate. You are best to look there for answers and you will find that adult is getting harder and harder to make any money on. Plenty of people will tell you not even to consider getting into adult any more with all the free content and piracy around. I will say the same thing to you. Don’t even consider it.

You either have to buy the content, produce your own, or serve as an affiliate in which case some TGP galleries and sample videos may be provided to you. Then when (and if) you refer a paying customer, you get a commission which is typically 50% of the subscription amount.

Not true. There are literally hundreds of thousands if not millions of adult content websites. Each webmaster may own hundreds of them. It’s a game of traffic, trading traffic with other adult web masters, and hoping you get a signup. It is harder now than ever to get a paying customer because of all the free content available.

If you want to try making some money at adult, I would suggest you try the Adult Friend Finder group of sites. They have the adult dating, live cams, plus pornography sites all under one umbrella. I have never done porn (I am morally opposed to it), but I did put an Adult Friend Finder banner on one non-pornographic adult-oriented (no nudity, just adult language and jokes and stuff) website of mine and did make some money from Adult Friend Finder signups. They used to pay a $130 commission on signups and I had a few of those. Then the pay per signup dropped to $55 or something and I eventually stopped advertising it.

When you put an Adult Friend Finder banner on your site, you also get paid if the visitor signs up to any of the other Adult Friend Finder websites. If you look on Adult Friend Finder, you will see ads for their other sites like maybe Penthouse. If someone clicks from your site to Adult Friend Finder then they click on a Penthouse banner on the Adult Friend Finder site then signup, you get paid for that, too, even though you didn’t directly refer the traffic to Penthouse. You just kind of brought the visitor to the umbrella of companies and you get paid for that.

You are not going to make much–if any–money from Adult. If you have time on your hands and nothing better to do, then maybe you could give it a try. Odds are the amount of time you spend getting into it won’t be worth what you make from it.

cheers for the opinions… i suppose it probably is a really saturated market… just at the time thought it might be a bit of an earner but maybe not… im confident in my web design these days, just anxious to get something online (that will actually generate some form of income, no matter how little)… thinking of an idea that will attract people is the hardest part it seems… on another note, when it comes to making money, and lets face it it all boils down to money through an enjoyable line of work/passion, what other options are there besides directly charging for a members area of a site, selling a product, adsense and affiliate ads? any other money making methods i should be reasearching?

Nowadays, there are tube sites popping up online everyday… they all do the same thing with the same videos, basically. Even on certain sites they tell you how to get/install a downloader to download tube videos. You can purchase scripts which download/upload videos from other sites onto yours. Or even just redirecting and gathering videos from other sites and putting them on a new page, with the video linked from the other sites.

Really, there’s nothing you could do to “top the adult industry”, tube sites are basically the same. You can add loads of videos and place ads, that’s essentially all they do to make the money they do. But then again, the thing with that is that all countries have people searching tube sites. Some appeal more, some have better videos/more videos etc. So if you market it correctly and get it known, it’ll be used… thus earning you some money…

It’s a risk, that’s for sure.

I found an article on Google News a while ago about the adult tube video sites. It turns out that most of the big ones are all owned by one company. If you think about it, once you have the technology in place all you have to do is design a different website template and have a bunch of different sites to capture as much traffic as possible.

If anyone is interested in the adult website business and why it is a waste of time to get started you can read this article from New York Magazine. The article is from January 2011. It goes into detail about how one major porn player started the tube sites, then expanded the tube sites and another company has been buying them all up. The people who are upset are the whore performers and the webmasters with original content because why would anyone pay $20 or $30 a month for pornography when you can get it for free?

The porn industry affiliate business model is dying. Don’t waste your time.

I just find it disturbing that someone looking to break into the web business industry would immediately think “I know! Porn!” Isn’t there enough sleaze and oppression in the world without someone else trying to profit from it?

A recent article claims that global adult industry revenue is about $5 Billion, which is apparently $95 billion less than it was a couple years ago. Most of this is attributed to file sharing. I’ve run an adult design business for 12 years and i’ve managed to develop some strategies that have kept me for the most part, immune to the decline of the business.

It is a challenging business to break into and make any kind of profit from these days, but there are PLENTY of ways still to make money in the adult industry without going the traditional rout of trying to profit from adult websites and selling digital content.
